Natalia Cantu

I am a ceramic artist from Mexico, now living in the Rio Grande Valley. My work has often been described as ‘whimsical’ due to the quaint, miniature scenes I sculpt onto the surfaces of carefully crafted handmade dish ware. My pieces play with a combination of art, aesthetics, and functionality.

After having a blockage in my digestive tract that landed me in the ICU in critical condition. A large segment of my small intestine needed to be removed, which led me to need a high level of care. Recovery proved extremely difficult, and the episode left me with a chronic illness that I still deal with to this day. This event ended up changing my life and what I thought to be my future completely.

4 years after the event, dealing with a chronic illness and being confused with what I wanted or could do with my life, I decided to impulsively sign up to a ceramics class in my local university.

Discovering ceramics completely changed my life. It helped me find community and connect with wonderful people. It benefited my physical and mental health by keeping me active and giving me an outlet to express my emotions. It has shown me who I am. I now see ceramics as I have come to see myself, delicate yet strong.
